What Is a Fence?
A Fence is a terrain edge with a special property, called Fence.
This is all there is to a Fence. Still, it can be very useful. To learn more about how to use Fences, see Fence.
Why Unfence?
Sometimes, Fences are simply in the way. If you have Fences all over your terrain, brushes cannot do their work in a differentiated way. By selectively unfencing, you can get rid of only those Fences you do not want.
Sometimes, you wish to keep most of your Fences. But maybe you have Fenced just a little too much. Now, you wish to make certain individual edgepaths in your terrain no longer be fenced.
Enter Unfence. Unfence uses control geometry. This affords highly differentiated results.
How to Unfence
In your control group geometry, select exactly those edges you wish to Unfence. Then you run Unfence.
Unfencing A Plot
Sometimes, you want to start from scratch, and quickly Unfence your full terrain plot.
😎 Pro Tip — To Unfence your plot, first preselect only your terrain plot, then run Unfence. This can be especially useful when you have several plots in your model, and your only wish to clear the Fences from one of them.
Another Way to Unfence
The other common way to remove the Fence property is to use a point-and-click tool, called Draw Fence.
Fence It Back
😟 I Unfenced too much. Can I Fence back?
Yes. Should you change your mind, you can get Fences back by selecting your original edge control group. Embed it. Fence it. Done.
🏷️ Remember to keep those control groups on a tag, so you can quickly hide them, and then reveal them when needed.
Letting Brushes Ignore Fences
If you are using brushes, and wish to only temporarily skip fences, you do not have to Unfence them. A simpler option is this.
When running the brush, right-click, and set your brush to Ignore Fence.
You may also use key F6 to toggle the brush mode.
