Mesh

Change terrain resolution by selection.

Control terrain mesh density by selected input geometry. Raise resolution locally to increase plasticity and surface detail. Lower resolution to save on your facebudget. Keep it simple.

Type:  Pick, Retopo
Menu:  Extensions > Landshape > Main > Mesh

Input

  • One group containing one well-defined perimeter. For instance one closed edge path, or one face, or one surface.
  • Multiple groups, each containing a well-defined perimeter.

Parameter

Resolution

Resolution sets terrain mesh cell side length. Resolution is global.

Control values by typing to the VCB whenever Mesh is active.

Operation

Direct

  1. Pre-select valid inputs, per above.
  2. Run Mesh.
  3. To adjust result, type values.

Mesh is a Pick command.

Note

Mesh resets the terrain mesh. Currently, Embeds will be removed.

Mesh versus Mesh Brush

Mesh is is a Pick tool.

Like all pick tools, Mesh lets you interact with the terrain via reusable input geometry, also called control groups. For Mesh, the input area will drive the affected terrain area. Pick tools like Mesh are thus ideal for accurate work.

However, Mesh also has a corresponding brush tool, called Mesh Brush. Brushes are ideal for more expressive, freeform work. You don't need to first create input geometry to use brushes. Instead, you can simply brush the terrain directly.

Thus, Mesh-Pick and Mesh-Brush tools both do the same thing. They change terrain resolution in an area. But they let you determine that area in two different ways.

When you need to change terrain resolution within an area with a precise boundary which ought to be reusable — use Mesh.

When you wish to change terrain resolution in a quick, freeform way — use Mesh Brush.

Workflow Tips

  • Landshape terrain is multi-resolution. You may change terrain resolution locally at any time using Mesh or Mesh Brush.
  • In general, it is better to start terrain low-resolution, and then increase resolution only where needed. Typically, reserve higher resolution for areas that have special interest, or require granular surface features.
  • For a model requiring a large context terrain surrounding a smaller grade site, you could use fairly low resolution for context, and use higher resolution for the site itself.
