Worst Landshape Practices
Worst Practises are the best practises in reverse.
😠 If you are a negativist, this page, which lists bad examples and misguided ideas, may provide a satisfactory reading.
😊 If you are a positivist, then you may be better off reading the best practises.
😱 Dare you enter the cabinet of Landshape horrors? If you do, keep reading.
— Let's enter…
🚫 Complicate Things
Start on a big, complex project. Hammer on blindly, hoping that the chaos you create will magically disappear if you simply add more stuff.
😵 This is a bad idea. Don't do it.
🚫 Overlap Terrain Plots
Overlap terrain plots so they are superimposed over each other in plan, making Landshape confused.
😵 This is a bad idea. Don't do it.
🚫 Make Random Holes Inside the Terrain
Let's make various internal holes in a terrain plot. We've been doing it for years with this other extension.
😵 This is a bad idea. Don't do it.
🚫 Work Mainly on the Rim
I prefer to embed so most of the Embed action happens across the outermost terrain rim, even though I know it is sensitive.
😵 This is a bad idea. Don't do it.
🚫 Use No Setback
I know that I should start out by creating a terrain that has a good measure of terrain padding around the inner area that I intend to edit. I understand that currently, it is easier to trim the terrain footprint than to grow it. And that some tools, like Embed, work best editing the meat of the terrain rather than its surrounding crust, as it were. Still, I choose to ignore this advice.
😵 This is a bad idea. Don't do it.
🚫 Tag Random Objects with "Landshape Terrain"
Hey, let's use the special "Landshape Terrain" tag to store anything else than real terrain. I'm sure it will probably work and not make Landshape deeply confused.
😵 This is a bad idea. Don't do it.
🚫 Do Everything in One Giant Complicated Model
Instead of performing wild experiments in a neat and separate sandbox model, do everything in the production model you are going to submit tomorrow.
😵 This is a bad idea. Don't do it.
🚫 Never Group Your Input
I know that Landshape Pick commands expect grouped input, yet maybe this time, I don't need to group raw geometry. Maybe it works because it is a Friday.
😵 This is a bad idea. Don't do it.
🚫 Keep Your Input in one Big Untagged Mess
Tagging is for losers. If I tag, I do it like a cowbow, haphazardly, because I will ride gloriously into the sunset, and never will need to revisit find my containers in panic just before the deadline.
😵 This is a bad idea. Don't do it.
🚫 Never Read Your Status Bar
Someone told me that the most important command instructions are often in the statusbar, but I can do without it.
😵 This is a bad idea. Don't do it.
🚫 Don't Organise Your Model
Why spend time organising your model, when you can spend all that time and 10 times more, looking for the thing which you did not bother to organise at the outset?
😵 This is a bad idea. Don't do it.
🚫 Don't Look at the Terrain while Editing It
You force blunt violence onto your terrain while looking away, only to be surprised tomorrow morning that half your terrain is gone, and so is your undo history.
😵 This is a bad idea. Don't do it.
🚫 Be Wreckless
If something goes wrong, why undo? It is much easier to simply pile on troubles on top of the old troubles.
😵 This is a bad idea. Don't do it.
🚫 Use Sloppy Input
Hey, why care about nice, clean, readable input, when you can fix the ensuing issues by spending your Friday night seeking advise on learn.holygon.com?
😵 This is a bad idea. Don't do it.
🚫 Occlude Terrain behind Buildings and Objects while Editing Terrain
There is no need to actually look at the terrain while editing it with Landshape's powerful tools. You gotta be kidding. I mean, what could possibly go wrong?
😵 This is a bad idea. Don't do it.
🚫 Style the Terrain so You no longer See its Topology
Hey, maybe I like white. Let me use 100 % white terrain material on 100% white background, and turn off those peske hidden edges. Look, everything is white!
😵 This is a bad idea. Don't do it.
🚫 After Your Terrain Mesh Got Messed up, Continue as if Nothing Happened
I'm sure random holes, double-faces and other severe mesh problems will not ripple through the terrain and make my life miserable. Like they say where I'm from: It ain't a crime if you don't get caught.
😵 This is a bad idea. Don't do it.
🚫 Never Undo
Rather than hitting a few Undos to go back until everything looks good, I'd say that my kind of folks do things otherwise. I can whip my broken terrain into submission. I firmly believe that a dead horse can magically resurrect. In fact, I find pleasure in flogging a dead horse. Besides, undo is for wimps.
😵 This is a bad idea. Don't do it.
🚫 Never Start from Scratch
Who cares that deleting my terrain, and starting it terrain from scratch can often be surprisingly quick, even quite refreshing? Start from scratch and achieve a fresh terrain often in mere minutes like my colleagues over there? No, not me. I much prefer to wallow on in my self-afflicted misery for days or weeks.
😵 This is a bad idea. Don't do it.
🚫 Ignore the User Manual
Lots of text an no fun makes me a dull boy. I don't need to learn any "pro tips". I can just wing it like there's no tomorrow.
😵 This is a bad idea. Don't do it.
🚫 Ignore the Tutorials
Watching short videos that show how commands work and how to combine them takes too long. I'm sure I can figure everything out myself.
😵 This is a bad idea. Don't do it.
🚫 Embed Uncleaned Externally-Sourced Edges
This monster CAD file, with 21 425 edges, that we got from somewhere, let's just Embed it and hope for the best. I'm sure Embed can handle just about anything. I don't need even need to run Landshape Clean or make sure that its edges are curated for Embedding.
😵 This is a bad idea. Don't do it.
🚫 Never Use Shortcuts
Instead of spending 15 seconds once, to set a shortcut for this command I love and which takes me 5 seconds to find in the menu and which I use let's see 30 times a day and 5 days a week, meaning I spend 50 minutes on it a month, I can just find it in the menu once more. Oh, and there is this free asset pack on Holygon's website, with lots of shortcuts already available, but I'm sure I'm better off chasing that menu post.
😵 This is a bad idea. Don't do it.
🚫 Refuse to Learn
At least you failed on this one, because you are already here.
🚫 Don't Communicate with Other Users
I'm the best. I can do everything myself. I don't need anyone else.
😵 This is a bad idea. Don't do it.
🚫 Be Afraid of Contacting Support
The support won't answer. They may think I'm stupid. I'm sure it's just me. Let's avoid contacting Holygon support.
😵 This is a bad idea. Don't do it.
