Learn Landshape — Command Types. Pick Commands

Pick Commands

Pick commands, also called Pickers, are at the heart of Landshape.

What Are Pickers?

Pickers are Landshape commands that let you edit terrain – its shape, style, mesh – via selected control geometry in groups.

To control your terrain, pickers use standard Sketchup geometry, like edges and faces.

Sketchup geometry can be very accurate. Since pickers use your Sketchup geometry to drive terrain results, you can design your landscape as accurately as you wish.

Different pickers support different kinds of input. Each Picker's toolbar icon tooltip, and its Learn page, tells you which kind of input it supports. You should always contain your input geometry in a group.

Pick Commands Explained

For a more detailed breakdown of how to work with Pickers, see Pick Overview and Understanding Pick.

😊 Happy picking!

List of All Pick Commands

Here are all of Landshape's Pickers, listed in top menu order:

Form

Create new terrain by selection.

Useful to make new Landshape terrain from e.g existing Isocurves, a non-Landshape terrain model, an Add-Location terrain, a poincloud. Group input before forming.

Menu:  Extensions > Landshape > Pick > Form

Mesh

Change terrain resolution by selection.

Control terrain mesh density by selected input geometry. Raise resolution locally to increase plasticity and surface detail. Lower resolution to save on your facebudget. Keep it simple.

Menu:  Extensions > Landshape > Pick > Mesh

Embed

Enmesh selected edges into terrain, enabling local features.

Useful to add local sharp definition to the terrain, in order to express a break in terrain elevations, or the limit between two materials.

Menu:  Extensions > Landshape > Pick > Embed

Fence

Activate the Fence property in terrain edges, by selected control edges.

Useful to guide brush strokes, and to make terrain borders pesist across mesh operations.

Menu:  Extensions > Landshape > Pick > Fence

Unfence

Remove Fence property from terrain edges, by selected control edges.

Useful to locally turn Fences into standard unfenced edges.

Menu:  Extensions > Landshape > Pick > Unfence

Fit

Conform terrain snugly to selection.

Useful to make terrain follow the surface and elevation of your geometry. Fit to a grouped level rectangle to create a local plateau.

Menu:  Extensions > Landshape > Pick > Fit

Blend

Fuse terrain outward or inward from selection bounds.

Useful to make terrain smoothly adapt to a target perimeter. Often used after Fit.

Menu:  Extensions > Landshape > Pick > Blend

Flare

Fuse terrain outward or inward at fixed angle from selection bounds.

Useful to create controlled-angle slopes from a local plateau.

Menu:  Extensions > Landshape > Pick > Flare

Puff

Raise or Sink terrain smoothly, within selection border.

Useful to organically elevate terrain, upward for e.g. mounds, downward for e.g. ponds or golf bunkers.

Menu:  Extensions > Landshape > Pick > Puff

Smooth

Reduce terrain sharpness and grain, within selection border.

Useful to remove local elevation artifacts. Smooth will not affect topology.

Menu:  Extensions > Landshape > Pick > Smooth

Noise

Roughen terrain, adding grain, within selection border.

Useful to add a bit of texture or life to overly smooth terrain. Noise will not affect topology.

Menu:  Extensions > Landshape > Pick > Noise

Sweep

Quickgrade terrain along selected paths.

Useful to create elevation for paths or roads. Input path controls both shape and elevation.

Menu:  Extensions > Landshape > Pick > Sweep

Grade

Force terrain to edges-and-points inside closed path in selection, and smoothen transitions.

Useful to accurately control the shape of terrain using minimal input. Grade is an advanced but poeerful command.

Menu:  Extensions > Landshape > Pick > Grade

Road

Make road along edge paths in selection.

Useful to quickly lay simple roads across the landscape.

Menu:  Extensions > Landshape > Pick > Road

Zone

Paint terrain by selection face material, creating zone.

Useful to color terrain. To get crisp material boundaries in the terrain, first Embed boundary edges, then Zone.

Menu:  Extensions > Landshape > Pick > Zone

Keep

Preserve terrain inside selection bounds, and erase any terrain outside.

Useful to trim away terrain. Will remove any terrain plots that are not contiguous with the kept plot. Best used at the end of the workflow.

Menu:  Extensions > Landshape > Pick > Keep

Trail

Create trail along selected path.

Menu:  Extensions > Landshape > Prop > Trail

Embed Fence

Enmesh selected edges into terrain, and Fence them, enabling local features, membrane for brushes, and iterative embedding.

Useful to Embed and Fence in one and the same operation. Fences are more permanent and enable feature-specific brush strokes.

Menu:  Extensions > Landshape > Prop > Embed Fence

Quake

Dramatize terrain randomly, within selection border.

Create organic height variation in a terrain. Useful to quickly whip up plots to befriend tools. Or for artistic purposes.

Menu:  Extensions > Landshape > Prop > Quake

Cut

Erase terrain inside selection bounds.

Useful to trim away terrain. Best used at the end of the workflow.

Menu:  Extensions > Landshape > Prop > Cut
