Form
Create new terrain by selection.
Useful to make new Landshape terrain from e.g existing Isocurves, a non-Landshape terrain model, an Add-Location terrain, a poincloud. Group input before forming.
Type: Pick, GrowMenu: Extensions > Landshape > Pick > Form
Input
- 1 group containing geometry: faces, edges, points.
- 2 groups. 1 containing geometry, plus 1 containing a closed edge path, used as mask.
Operation
Direct
- Pre-select valid input, per above.
- Run Form.
- To adjust result, type values.
Form is a Pick command.
Features
- If your single input group contains a clearly defined perimeter, Form will automatically apply the perimeter as a rim for the new terrain, and also include the rim as part of the new terrain.
- If you use 2 input groups, one containing the target geometry, plus one containing a clearly defined perimeter, Form will shape terrain heights by the target, and then automatically use the perimeter to cut the terrain rim.
- To visualize the mask before forming, start Form with nothing selected. Then, within Form, Pick a mask or any other target geometry. The mask will show in magenta outline.
Try Form Yourself
Basic – Form from Face
Create a single face, e.g. a rectangle, in empty space. Group it. Select it. Click Form.
You should now have a new Landshape terrain plot.
Intermediate – Forming with Mask
Intermediate – First, make sure your model has one group containing e.g. isocurves, points, or any non-Landshape terrain geometry, for instance an Add-Location terrain. Second, create a mask. A mask is a closed edge loop. You can create a mask by drawing e.g. a rectangle, and grouping it. Third, Select both the source group, and the mask group. Run Form.
You should now have a new terrain, whose rim is cut by the mask.
A mask is useful, because it enables you to selectively form new terrain, even from source groups that are much larger than the plot you need.
Note
You cannot form with more than two input groups selected. However, the principal source input group may have any amount of geometry and subgroups.
Limitations
Currently, you cannot form new terrain where there is already terrain. You can only have one Landshape terrain in the same plan position.
Reposition your input, and try again.

Troubleshooting Form Input
🤔 Does Form not work as expected? Probably, you are using invalid input.
😎 For Pick commands, it's easy to learn valid inputs. Try one of these:
- Simply hover your cursor over the Form command button in the toolbar. This should show a tooltip. The tooltip shows a summary of valid input.
- Open Learn, and manually navigate to the Form page. Read the instructions carefully.
- Run Form, and while Forming, right-click any geometry. In the context menu, run Landshape > Learn Form. The context menu should automatically send you to the currently active command's Learn page.
- Open SketchUp's Instructor panel. It should update as you switch tools. You may dock the Instructor to a side tray.
