Flip Jagged Diagonals
Automatically find and flip quadratic terrain cell diagonals in areas where terrain may appear needlessly jagged. This will not affect facecount, but may be useful to make terrain appear smoother.
Type: PickMenu: Extensions > Landshape > Prop > Flip Jagged Diagonals
Background
- Lowpoly terrain may sometime exhibit visual artifacts, especially where terrain quickly changes curvature direction. This can happen along the apex of terrain ridges and along the bottom of valleys, especially if sharp. This effect is caused by the diagonal of the terrain cell running perpendicular to the line of local maximum curvature change. The adverse effect is often exacerbated by the direction of the face shading.
Tips
- In some scenarios, flipping diagonals will in practice increase your facecount budget. This is because when you use flip, you can express your intended shape using fewer faces, while retaining acceptable smoothness.
- Flipping may be slow in large terrains. To limit flip to a particular area, preselect an area filter, then run Flip.
- The Flip command will automatically flip diagonals in batch, per area. Sometimes, you instead wish to manually flip the diagonal of one or more individual terrain cells. To manually flip cell diagonals, instead use the Stitch command.
